Clear braces are one of the many options you get to choose from if you are looking for a new way to improve the alignment of your teeth. Clear braces provide a more subtle approach to straightening smiles, one that does not draw unnecessary attention to the patient during their treatment.
The same cannot be said about traditional metal braces. They are highly conspicuous and can lead to teasing and uncomfortable questions. Some people who need teeth alignment treatment actually hold off on getting braces simply because they would rather not deal with the stress associated with them.
An Invisalign® dentist goes over the process of installing clear braces
The process of getting Invisalign® cleaar braces starts with a consultation with a dentist. The oral professional examines the patient's teeth looking for problems with their alignment. Diagnostic tests like X-rays might be used to evaluate the patient's oral health. Issues that can be fixed with clear braces include:
- Spaces between teeth
- Overbites
- Underbites
- Crossbites
- Crooked teeth
Once the dentist determines that clear braces are the way to go, digital images of the patient's teeth are taken. These images are used to generate projections of what the patient's teeth will look like as their treatment progresses. Once both parties are satisfied, the data is sent over to a dental lab that makes clear braces. It can take up to two weeks before the patient's custom clear aligner trays are ready.
The patient is called back in when their oral appliances are ready, and the dentist educates them about how to insert, remove and maintain their clear braces. The dentist will also educate the patient about how long they have to wear their clear aligners each day. For most patients, that is somewhere between 20 to 22 hours each day.
The patient will get several aligner trays at a time from their dentist. Each is worn for about two weeks before being switched out with another that applies a little more force on the patient's teeth. Each time the patient switches out their aligner tray, it is a sign that their teeth are getting closer to their proper alignment.
Benefits of choosing clear braces
An increasing number of patients opt for clear braces over other options like traditional metal braces or lingual braces because:
- Clear braces can be easily removed, so they do not get in the way of eating or cleaning the mouth
- Clear braces are more comfortable to wear than having traditional metal braces permanently fixed in place
- Clear braces are almost impossible to notice when a person has them
- Treatment times with clear braces are often shorter than treatment times with metal braces
- Clear braces do not increase a person's risk of tooth decay like metal braces do
